In-House Indigenous Therapist

Culturally Grounded Healing and Mental Health Support : At Restore Child and Youth Care, we understand that healing from trauma, grief, and disconnection must be approached with both clinical expertise and cultural understanding. That’s why we’ve contracted an in-house Indigenous therapist to support the children and youth in our care.
Our therapist provides a safe, culturally respectful space for youth to explore and express their emotions, while also reconnecting with their identity and inner strength. With a strong foundation in both mental health practice and Indigenous knowledge systems, this service is essential to our holistic approach.
Areas of support include

Grief and Loss

Many of the children and youth in our care are navigating the pain of losing loved ones, separation from family or community, or historical and intergenerational trauma. Our therapist helps youth process and heal from these losses through talk therapy, cultural teachings, and when appropriate, ceremonies or land-based healing practices that honor those who have passed.

Trauma and Emotional Regulation

Using trauma-informed care, our therapist helps youth understand and manage overwhelming emotions, triggers, and stress.

Anxiety, Depression, and Mental Health Challenges

Therapy is tailored to each individual, helping them build coping strategies and a sense of emotional resilience.

Cultural Identity and Reconnection

Through mentorship, teachings, and community connection, the therapist supports youth in reclaiming their Indigenous identity and pride.

Collaboration with Elders and Cultural Mentors

The therapist works alongside Elders to ensure that healing practices align with the cultural backgrounds and spiritual needs of each youth.
This in-house therapeutic service is a core part of Restore’s mission to support the whole child — emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and culturally — helping them not just survive, but truly heal, reconnect, and thrive.

Our Services

Group Care (Capacity 3- 4 maximum)

We offer safe, home-like environments for Indigenous children and youth who are unable to live with their families. Our group homes provide 24/7 care and supervision, focusing on emotional safety, stability, and relationship building. Each home fosters a sense of belonging and community, with trained staff who prioritize healing through connection. Cultural practices, such as smudging, drumming, and storytelling, are integrated into daily life to help youth stay grounded in their heritage.

Emergency Placements

Restore provides immediate, short-term placements for Indigenous children and youth experiencing crises or needing urgent care. Our emergency placements offer a safe, supportive space where children can stabilize while longer-term plans are made. We work closely with Child and Family Services, Indigenous communities, and caregivers to ensure a culturally responsive and compassionate approach during these transitions

High Needs Support

Some youth come to us with significant emotional, psychological, or behavioral challenges. Our High Needs Support program is designed to meet these complex needs through individualized care plans, therapeutic support, and a team of experienced staff. We use trauma-informed, strength-based approaches that center around each child's experiences, with a focus on resilience, healing, and long-term wellness. Elders and cultural mentors are available to support spiritual and emotional growth

Indigenous Mentorship & Cultural Guidance

Restore Child and Youth Care offers Indigenous mentorship through a contracted Elder who provides cultural guidance, spiritual support, and connection for the youth in our care.
Youth have the opportunity to:
  • Reconnect with their identity and traditions

  • Participate in ceremonies like smudging, drumming, and sharing circles

  • Receive wisdom from someone who understands their lived experiences

  • Heal through culture and community

This mentorship is trauma-informed, relationship-based, and rooted in the belief that culture is medicine. We walk alongside each youth as they rediscover strength through their roots.

Legal Representation & Advocacy

Supporting Youth Involved in the Justice System: At Restore Child and Youth Care, we understand that some children and youth may become involved with the legal system. As part of our commitment to holistic care, we offer legal support services for youth who may be facing criminal charges or legal challenges.
We collaborate closely with a dedicated lawyer who has extensive experience in Indigenous law and a deep understanding of the systemic issues that impact Indigenous youth in the justice system. This partnership allows us to provide:
  • Confidential legal guidance tailored to each youth's situation
  • Advocacy in court and support through legal processes
  • Culturally-informed legal representation that respects and incorporates Indigenous values and teachings
  • Collaborative planning with caseworkers and guardians to ensure the youth’s rights and well-being are protected throughout
This additional service can be discussed on a case-by-case basis and is available to youth in our care who require legal support. Our goal is to ensure every young person feels heard, protected, and empowered as they navigate the justice system.
